| What is it about Mick Jagger? He’s not what you'd call good looking but women still swoon over him. What is ugly, anyway?
Despite what we read in magazines, ugly can be beautiful!
A study by the University of New South Wales into how birds, fish, and humans choose mates has uncovered some interesting biological facts. Evolutionary biologist Rob Brooks told the New Scientist that "Ugly individuals can sometimes do better than good-looking ones."
Dr Brooks was involved in a study of guppy fish and their dating habits. While male guppies with bright orange spots were the Brad Pitts of the aquarium, some of the girl fish liked the boy fish with...shock horror...black spots! This explains why there are still black spotted guppies swimming around, instead of all orange, as we would assume. Nature doing what it does best.
And the relevance of fish to humans is …? Imagine if we all had the same taste in men, and vice versa. Do we want a planet full of Brads? Or Britneys?
That old statement beauty is in the eye of the beholder has Mother Nature standing right behind it holding a placard shouting "yes!".
The point is made very well by Dr Brooks, who says most studies take an average of what people think is attractive. "You don't mate with an average, you mate with an individual." Saying somebody is unattractive, or attractive, warrants the response "in your opinion".
“Unattractive” men who have a sensitive streak can be attractive, despite their looks. Canadian researchers found men on dating sites who listed 'altruistic pursuits' like volunteer work were more likely to attract women. This signals women that the man will have a real interest in a relationship and children. Unfortunately, men found good-natured women to be less attractive. Apparently men think 'nice girls' won't put out! But men would go into business with or lend money to 'nice girls'.
" Single women have not figured out that men are most attracted to women who have what is called a 'feminine presence'. Physical beauty has something to do with feminine presence but physical beauty is very relative and feminine presence goes way beyond just physical beauty. The thing is that 90% percent of women have 'feminine presence' but they don't realise it or seem to think that being feminine is a bad thing.”
Food for thought next time you're having an 'ugly day'.
